anecdote # 134 (double-length) - cluster of ladies

herded me into a closet
told me I was to change
to my going-away dress

they'd knock

when it was proper time
to be presented as bride
in post-wedding dress.

too obedient I stayed, waited.

no knock. sound dispersed.
when I emerged — no one.
outdoors a few guests remained

- where were you?
- who left with the husband then?
- the best man.
- he'll be back, dear.

this wasn't covered in rehearsal!

forgotten in the day's confusion, — me?
pranked instead of sardine-engined?

Did anyone ever explain/apologise?

nah, everyone was gone.

and they were of the old life, old city. wouldn't see them again.

no hard feelings at the time. now I look back and see the absurdity of it.
