dad rushed to the hospital to mom
in the freezing rain. the wigwag failed.
he hit that freight train
— nothing the conductor could have done to stop.
he saw(?) dad spin off into the lake,
old Chev floating till it sunk?
no derailment, no deaths.
he doggie-paddled clear of the wreck.
swore never to wear an accursed seatbelt.
almost lost him before I knew him.
at that crossing I roll down my window
every time, check for the whistle.
